European-Inspired Primary Bath
PROJECT OVERVIEW
This project involved the full design of a primary bathroom within a new build, with a focus on creating a space that felt collected, architectural, and distinctly European in character. The goal was to move beyond standard builder finishes and instead craft a bath that felt layered, intimate, and enduring.
DESIGN INTENT
The vision was a European-inspired retreat — warm, refined, and rich in materiality. Rather than leaning into stark modern minimalism, the design embraced depth: dramatic stone, tailored millwork, unlacquered brass, and soft ambient lighting.
The bathroom was meant to feel like a private sanctuary — elegant but not flashy, classic without feeling predictable.
KEY CHALLENGES
One of the primary challenges was balancing bold material choices with timeless restraint. The dramatic marble-look tile used in the shower and shelving niche required careful coordination so it felt intentional rather than overwhelming.
Another consideration was proportion and architectural detailing. The space needed to feel elevated and custom, not simply finished. That meant refining cabinetry lines, integrating sconces into millwork panels, and thoughtfully designing the tub alcove so it felt built-in and architectural.
Lighting also played a critical role. The space required layered illumination that would enhance the warmth of the materials without flattening their texture.
DESIGN APPROACH
The design centered around a striking calacatta marble-look tile with bold, organic veining — used strategically in the shower enclosure and shelving niche to create a focal moment. Custom-style millwork cabinetry was designed in a soft, warm neutral tone to provide contrast and quiet balance. Brass hardware and sculptural sconces were selected to introduce warmth and patina, reinforcing the European influence.
The vanity elevation was detailed with panel molding to create architectural rhythm, while the double mirrors were integrated seamlessly into the millwork wall to avoid visual clutter. In the bathing zone, the tub was framed by built-in shelving highlighted with the same marble-look tile as in the shower, allowing styling moments that felt curated rather than decorative. A statement chandelier above the tub adds softness and intimacy, anchoring the space with a sense of quiet drama.
Every element was selected to feel cohesive, layered, and intentional.
OUTCOME
The finished bath feels luxurious without excess. It reads as timeless, architectural, and deeply considered.
The interplay between bold stone, tailored millwork, and warm metals creates a space that feels elevated yet serene — a private retreat that feels equally suited to everyday use and indulgent relaxation. Rather than chasing trend, the design leans into enduring materials and thoughtful detailing — ensuring the space will feel just as refined ten years from now.
